Let Your Light Shine

“We are all meant to shine as children do. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own lights shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” (From the movie Coach Carter, Quote from Marianne Williamson)
A friend of mine recently posted this quote on Facebook and it really got my attention. I have been blessed with the opportunity to work with many people over the past 15+ years in various businesses and in a broad range of industries. With the joy I’ve had working with these people, I’ve also witnessed a certain type of sadness with some along the way.
Many people I work with are successful, in part, because of their dreams. Some are successful aside from their dreams. And a few could have been successful if they would have allowed themselves to dream.
The first set of people is easy to read. They have a dream and take whatever actions needed to bring their dreams to reality. It is the second and third set of people that warrant a closer look and some shared insight.
In the quote above, it says that “We are all meant to shine as children do. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone” and I have to wonder if that is a hint at what holds many people back from acting on their dreams. Often times it isn’t even a dream that some don’t pursue. Often it’s a great, or even just a good idea that for some reason they do not chase.
When I talk with some people, they tell me grand stories - their dreams - of what they’d like to do with their job, career or business, but it remains just that…a dream. When we delve deeper and I ask what’s holding them back from pursuing that dream, I typically get very weak answers; the weight of the obstacle should be nowhere close to causing a shattered dream.
“Shine as children do.” Children glow as they have a dream and shine in their pursuit of it. They shine because children let no obstacle come between where they are and where they want to be. And if they can’t obtain it, they create it. Either way, children make their dreams their reality.
Somewhere along the way, many children experience outside forces that gradually chip away at their pursuit. Much of the time it is from being told “No” or some other version of what they want is impossible to actually attain in “real life.” The squashing they receive as children resonates into their adult life and affects many of the dreams and ideas they now have.
Let’s switch gears. The light, as mentioned above, is not just in some of us; it’s in all of us! That is great news! Now we just have to let the light shine. This may be more difficult for some than others. It may take longer for some as well. Regardless, if you’ve lost your shine, it’s going to take a conscious effort to get your shine back.
“…give other people permission…” to let their light shine. The next time you have an idea, a revelation or a dream, I give you permission to pursue it to fruition with the zest you had as a child. Whether it is a new dream, or a dream you’ve had for quite some time, visually double that dream into two dreams. Stay with me here…
On the left, visualize your dream with the resources needed to attain it, and the benefit it will have on you and the people you serve. On the right, visualize your dream as if you are five years old again. Visualize it with the same vigor, zeal and creative passion you had when you built your castle out of a pile of twigs and a ball of twine.
Once you’re envisioning your dream from both sides of your brain, and the fullness of your heart, now commit to pursuing it. As you pursue, feel your shine become brighter. As you pursue, watch your shine become contagious. And it truly will become contagious, not only within yourself to burn brighter and brighter, but within those around you whose spark is ignited by your flame.
Finally, as your light shines and your fears are liberated, you will pursue more and more dreams. At work, or in your business, your light will shine as you serve your customers. Your light will be seen and felt by your customers and will liberate their fears. Your light will become their light and the light you both share becomes a loyalty to you.
